BEHIND THE WHEEL: Test driving Lincoln passion

By LINDA BROWN, Behind The Wheel

If dressing for success includes the car you drive, the 2009 Lincoln MKS is waiting to take you home.

With a clean, dramatic look, the car has strong masculine appeal and projects a lot of confidence.

From the get-go, the face of the vehicle says “I’m a Lincoln,” with the split-waterfall grill and the highly recognizable Lincoln star shining from the center.

The uncluttered body design has just the right amount of chrome. Bigger tires and wheels enhance the dramatic look and drive the elegant factor right to the top of the chart.

While there’s lots of passion in the MKS, it’s not just a pretty car. State-of-the-art technology means an adaptive headlight package that allows the headlights to swivel and actually track the road.

The vehicle is totally operated by an intelligent access key fob, without the key. Once activated, door and trunk access are allowed with a touch of the hand. The vehicle features a touch button start; pretty cool.

The cap-less fuel system means you’ll never touch a gas cap again and the keyless entry applies the traditional five-button access, except the keyless pad disappears when not in use; another feature that adds to the strong clean body-line appearance.

One dashboard feature that left me smiling is the fuel indicator that displays exactly how many miles you have to go before you either refuel or walk — a handy little trinket for those of us who like to temp fate now and then.

Another mark of a luxury car this Lincoln doesn’t miss is the 12-way adjustable power passenger and driver’s seats. The driver’s seat returns to the previous driver’s position upon car re-entry. Both front seats also are heated and cooled, the driver’s side is equipped with memory.

If a sound system is important, this sweet little ride comes with an AM/FM w/CD/MP3 SIRIUS Satellite radio.

On the lot at Ottawa Ford-Lincoln,-Mercury, 402 N. Main St. this pretty baby drives like a dream. It feels strong and safe, and the 3.7L V6 delivers all the performance you’d expect on the highway. The camel leather seating is supportive without being rigid. Visibility on all four sides is excellent with the ease of entry and exit about what you’d expect from a luxury sedan — not too low, not too high.

Dressed in Smokestone clear-coat, this Lincoln MKS retails for $35,700 and comes with a six-year/70,000 power train warranty. Not a bad price for the amount of luxury and power.
