Tooley wins awards for media guides

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Ottawa University sports information director Katie Tooley earned two awards at the 2009 NAIA-SIDA workshop at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Texas.

Tooley’s combined men’s and women’s basketball media guide finished fourth out of 15 entries in the combined basketball brochure contest. She finished ninth last year in the same category. Her men’s and women’s soccer media guide finished fifth out of 43 entries.

“I am very happy that these two publication have been recognized,” Tooley said. “It is nice to be honored.”

This is the second straight year that Tooley has had two of her publications recognized.

W.F. scramble set for Tuesday

West Franklin Golf scramble will be 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hickory Hollow. The cost is $10 and covers golf and a cart.

Falcons take second in tournament

BURLINGTON — The West Franklin under-16 baseball team this weekend took second in the Burlington Tournament.

The Falcons lost 12-7 to the Emporia Thunder in the championship contest. Earlier in pool play, the Falcons nipped the Thunder, 4-3.

West Franklin advanced to the title game with a 5-2 win over Louisburg in the semifinals.

“This was the best we have played all year. We swung the bats well and played much better defense. We still had a few defensive lapses and at times our pitchers struggled with throwing strikes,” West Franklin coach Ian Evans said. “Our goal is to play better every time out and we have done that so far.”

West Franklin plays 1 p.m. Saturday in Pomona against the Ottawa A.

Ramirez heads to Albuquerque

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Suspended slugger Manny Ramirez of the Los Angeles Dodgers is set to start his minor league stint on Tuesday with Triple-A Albuquerque.

‘‘Manny has agreed to go to Albuquerque on Tuesday,’’ Dodgers manager Joe Torre said Saturday.

He is eligible to be reinstated on July 3, when the Dodgers are in San Diego.

USC hires O’Neill as basketball coach

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kevin O’Neill returned to the college ranks Saturday when he was announced as Southern California’s basketball coach, taking over from Tim Floyd.

The school announced O’Neill’s hiring in an e-mail. Floyd suddenly resigned June 9 amid allegations that he paid to have O.J. Mayo delivered to the Trojans.

He said he was quitting after four seasons because he no longer had enthusiasm for his job.
