LEROY D. BIEN

LeRoy D. Bien (Bienie), age 83, of Ottawa, Kan., died Friday, June 19, 2009. He was born Monday, Oct. 12, 1925, in Jefferson City, Mo. He was the son of Virgil and Janelle (Blevins) Bien.

He was a lifelong resident of Ottawa.

LeRoy graduated from Ottawa High School with the class of 1943.

He was a lifelong auto body repairman. In the mid 1950s, he worked for Hewitt Chevrolet; from 1957 to 1966, Bienie’s Garage and Body Shop; 1966 to 1970, was a foreman for Moore Chevrolet; 1970 to 1973, Ray Brown Ford; and 1973 to retirement in 1985, owned and operated Bienie’s Body Shop.

From June 23, 1943, to Dec. 23, 1945, LeRoy served in the United States Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was a petty officer third class and boiler technician aboard the USS Shamrock Bay.

He was a member and supporter of Sacred Heart Church, and life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post No. 5901 and Aerie Lodge No. 2700, Fraternal Order of Eagles, all of Ottawa.

Bienie was a former state trap shoot champion and avid golfer, gardener, bowler, dirt track race car driver and fisherman, and also loved camping.

On Jan. 16, 1946, LeRoy was united in marriage with Jeanette H. Slaby in Ottawa. She preceded him in death on Aug. 1, 2005.

He also was preceded in death by a son, Rick Bien; and a brother, Virgil Bien.

Survivors include a daughter, Bonnie Coffman and her husband, Carl, of Wellsville; sons, Tim Bien and his wife, Rosemary, of Pomona, James Bien and his wife, Nancy, of Ottawa, Aaron Bien and his wife, Cindy, of Olathe, Charles Bien and his wife, Frida, of Sacramento, Calif., ; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Graveside inurnment services will be 10 a.m. Friday, June 26, 2009, at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Ottawa.

Cremation is planned. Family will meet with friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Dengel and Son Mortuary.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Sacred Heart School or Heart of America Hospice, in care of Dengel and Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory St., Ottawa KS  66067.
