Rantoul man accused in church theft case set for court date

By The Herald Staff

A Rantoul man accused of stealing thousands of dollars from the Rantoul Presbyterian Church when he was church treasurer is set to enter his plea in court next month.

Edward Thomas Fisher, 58, Rantoul, waived his rights to a preliminary hearing Friday afternoon. During a preliminary hearing, the state presents evidence and a judge decides whether a case will continue based on that evidence.

Fisher was arrested in April on charges of felony theft.

Prosecutors allege Fisher stole at least $60,000 when he was treasurer of the church.

The arraignment — at which time Fisher is expected to enter into a plea of guilty, not guilty or no contest — is scheduled for 2 p.m. July 6 at Franklin County District Court.
