Falcons on a roll, sweep Garnett

By The Herald Staff

GARNETT — The West Franklin Falcons are on fire. The squad swept Garnett in two run-rule games in Garnett.

The Falcons won the opener, 18-4, and the nightcap, 21-1. The Falcons were coming off a sweep Saturday over Ottawa Legion A and a second-place finish in the Burlington Tournament.

The Falcons pitchers came up with gems after struggling in Saturday’s games.

“Our pitchers threw strikes and worked quick in both games. It was good to see,” Falcons coach Ian Evans said.

Tyler Webb pitched the first four innings of the opener. Brand Jung tossed the fifth inning.

Jacob Giest went three innings of the nightcap. Jacob Bush closed it with an inning.

The Falcons’ offense has come to life in the recent wins.

“We have been able to score runs but we need to get better and keeping the score down,” Evans said. “We”re going to see better pitching at some point and we need to learn how to win low scoring games. We aren’t going to score 15 runs a game in Salina.”

The Falcons plays this weekend, starting Thursday, in the Kansas Grandslam in Salina. It is a wood bat tournament.

“We are the youngest team in the tournament and we are from the smallest school. It’s going to be fun,” Evans said.

West Franklin opens pool play 8 p.m. Thursday at Dean Evans Stadium against Dodge City. The Falcons play two games Friday against Blue Valley (10 a.m.) and Manhattan (2 p.m.). Pool play ends 9 a.m. Saturday against Hays.
