Two Ottawans sentenced in drug trafficking case

By JODIE GARCIA, Herald Staff Writer

Two Ottawans were sentenced Wednesday to a total of 50 years in federal prison for their roles in an Ottawa-based drug trafficking operation.

Jeremy Garrod, 29, Ottawa, was sentenced to 30 years, and Clarissa Burgoon, 34, Ottawa, was sentenced to 20 years, a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s office said.

Gary Matthews, 30, Kansas City, Kan., also was sentenced to 10 years.

Investigators used confidential informants, financial records and surveillance to investigate the three as they engaged in drug trafficking and money laundering in Franklin County and Kansas City, Kan., the release said.

Some of the transactions involved large quantities of methamphetamine that were bought or sold for about $10,000 a pound, the release said.

Garrod and Matthews pleaded guilty to one count each of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine.

In their pleas, they admitted they conspired with each other and others to distribute meth from May 1, 2005, through June 20, 2007.

Burgoon pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to launder money to promote the conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine.

She admitted that from May 1, 2005, through June 20, 2007, she conspired with Garrod to launder proceeds from the drug trafficking conspiracy to promote the continued illegal activity, the release said.
