Deal gets teen nearly 3 years for burglaries

By JODIE GARCIA, Herald Staff Writer

An Ottawa man was sentenced Monday to nearly three years in prison for burglarizing area businesses.

Meanwhile, cases are continuing or closed for others arrested for similar crimes at the same time.

Jeremy Q. Evans, 19, was sentenced to 35 months in prison after being convicted of one count of aggravated burglary, as well as 12 months for one count of non-residential burglary.

He accepted a plea agreement last month.

Judge Thomas Sachse ordered that the sentences be served at the same time.

Sachse granted jail time credit and said Evans could be eligible for a reduction in his sentence based on good behavior.

He said Evans must pay court costs and other fees, as well as write apology letters to his victims and pay restitution.

Franklin County Attorney Heather Jones said Monday she didn’t know the exact amount of restitution, but Evans’ lawyer said it exceeded $50,000.

Evans was one of five arrested in November following a number of break-ins, vandalism and theft to Ottawa and Franklin County businesses, churches and schools.

A preliminary hearing Monday for Dallas Ambler, 19, Ottawa, was continued. A status conference is set for 9:30 a.m. Aug. 4.

Darrell Chandley, 17, Ottawa, and Dominique Burnett, 17, Ottawa, accepted plea agreements that carried sentences up to 36 months in a juvenile correction facility and were ordered to pay restitution.

A sentencing hearing for Chris Smith, Ottawa, was continued to 2 p.m. July 28 at Franklin County District Court.
