BERNICE “MARGARET” HUTCHINS

Bernice “Margaret” Hutchins, 95, Ottawa, died Sunday, July 20, 2008, at the Ottawa Retirement Village Plaza. Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home, Ottawa.

She was born Nov. 25, 1912, at Montgomery, Ala., to Agassiz T. and Emma (McCoy) Hutchins.

She grew up and attended grade school in Birmingham, Ala. She moved to Ottawa in 1926. She moved to Guatemala in 1948. She returned to Ottawa in 1976.

She graduated from Ottawa High School in 1930. She attended Ottawa University for three years, transferred to the University of Kansas and graduated with a degree in history in 1934. In 1945 she attended the Kansas City Bible College.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Ottawa. She taught the Homebuilders Sunday School Class, sang in the Choir and played in the Bell Choir. She was a co-chair of the First Baptist History and Preservation Committee, a deacon on the church council and co-chair of the American Baptist Women.

She taught first grade in Ottawa for a year, then taught a year at Boyd School, northwest of Pomona, a year at Spivey High School in south-central Kansas and a year at Fairview, near Hiawatha. She also worked as bookkeeper and teller at the Ottawa State Bank. She also worked in civil service, first at Fort Riley and then with the Construction Quartermaster Corps, Omaha, Neb. She spent a year as registrar and English teacher at Omaha Bible Institute. She was a missionary for 29 years and taught in three languages, Spanish, Mam and English. She retired in 1976 to return home to care for her Aunt Lena. She also was a private tutor, volunteered at the Ottawa City Library and taught at Ottawa’s Adult Education Center.

Survivors include a sister, Jane Israel, Tuscaloosa, Ala.; nieces and nephews, Wallace T. Glanville, and his wife, Carolyn, Shawnee, Roberta Brown, Lenexa, Dorothy Congrove, and her husband, Jim, Lawrence, Traver Hutchins, and his wife, Debra, Marlow, Okla., Jenny Benefield, and her husband, Tim, Tuscaloosa, Ala., Nancy Skinner, and her husband, Bill, Savannah, Ga., Dick Israel, and his wife, Margy, Wedowee, Ala., and Bob Israel, and his wife, Cammie, Mobile, Ala.; many great-nieces and great-nephews; and a sister-in-law, Gladys Hutchins, Marlow, Okla.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Wallace T. Hutchins; and a sister, Marian Lyle Glanville.

Burial will be at Highland Cemetery, Ottawa.

Family will meet with friends at 1 p.m. Tuesday before the service at the funeral home.
