JOHN F. SLAVEN

John F. Slaven, 85, Ottawa, died Friday, July 18, 2008, at his home. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 401 W. 13th St., Ottawa.

He was born March 8, 1923, at Arkansas City to Archie and Emma (Mickish) Slaven.

He moved to a farm in the Briles Community near Wellsville in 1952. He moved to Ottawa in 1994.

He graduated from the Arkansas High School in 1941. He attended and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Kansas State University in 1951 with a double major in animal husbandry and zoology and with a minor in chemistry. He received his masters degree in 1952.  

He served in the 11th Armored Division of the U.S. Army during World War II. He lost his eyesight as result of injuries received during the Battle of the Bulge. He received the Purple Heart.

He was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, Ottawa; Veterans of Foreign Wars, Ottawa Memorial Post No. 5901; American Legion at Wellsville and a former member of the New Hope Baptist Church, near Wellsville.

He enjoyed fishing, listening to the Audio Reader, playing cards — especially pinochle — and spending time with his family and friends.

He was a farmer and had a commercial egg business.

He married Esther E. Evans June 8, 1947, at Kansas City, Kan. They shared more than 58 years of marriage. She preceded him in death Feb. 25, 2006.  

Survivors include daughters, Teresa Meals, Kansas City, Mo., Rebecca Maddern, and her husband, Bob, Overland Park, and Nancy Taylor, and her husband, Tim, Ottawa; sisters, Mona Ball, Arkansas City, Myrna Snyder, Bellevue, Neb., and LoRenne Slaven, Arkansas City; brothers, Archie Slaven, Wichita, Paul Slaven, Carson, Calif., Richard Slaven, Orange, Calif., Robert Slaven, Tyler, Texas, Victor Slaven, Thonotosassa, Fla., Ronald Slaven, Arkansas City, and Earl Slaven, Arkansas City; grandchildren, Sheryl Jordan, and her husband, Steve, Overland Park, Zack Maddern, Overland Park, and Lauren Taylor, Kansas City, Mo.; and great-grandchildren, Sydney and Ian Jordan.

He also was preceded in death by sisters, Nellie Smith and Linda Slaven.

Burial will be at the Peoria Cemetery, Peoria.

Family will meet with friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home, Ottawa.
