Fair week begins for Anderson County

By BRIAN WILLIAMS, Herald Staff Writer

A week of Anderson County Fair activities begins and ends at school.

The clothing fashion revue and arts exhibits will be displayed at 8 a.m. this morning with judging at 1 p.m. at Anderson County Junior-Senior High School, 100 W. K-31, Garnett.

The fair week concludes Aug. 1 with two performances from country music legend David Frizzel at the high school auditorium. Frizzel, who hit the top of the country charts with “I’m Gonna Hire a Wino To Decorate Our Home” and “You’re the Reason God Made Oklahoma,” which he performed with Shelly West, will be in concert at 4:30 p.m. and at 7:30 p.m.

Advance tickets can be purchased through Friday at the Anderson County/K-State Research Extension Office, 411 S. Oak St., Garnett, or area banks. Tickets will be available at the door Saturday, Susan Wettstein, Garnett Tourism Advisory Committee member, said.

The country connection continues from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the 15th annual Merchant’s Tent at the Anderson County Fairgrounds, East Park and North Lake roads, Garnett. The Cornstock booth will raffle off two “meet and greets” with the September show’s featured artist, Diamond Rio. The packages include tickets, backstage passes and VIP parking, Wettstein said.

The chances won’t cost an arm and a leg, although an arm is an option.

“Tickets are $1 or seven for $5, or you can stretch out an arm and get its length in tickets for $10,” Wettstein said.

All of the merchants’ booths in the tent will have an item to raffle off, and all of the tickets will go in the hopper for the grand prize drawing of $250 in Chamber Bucks at 9 p.m. Winners must be present to receive prizes, Wettstein said.

The annual fair parade will be 7 p.m. Tuesday. This year’s theme is “4-H Living in the Country.”

The 4-H and open class animals and exhibits will register Tuesday morning at the fairgrounds, with judging at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
