They came. And they were hungry.

Ottawans and other area residents flocked Thursday evening to Forest Park for the Extreme Makeover BBQ Throwdown — a competition event thrown in conjunction with the “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” build project south of Ottawa.

Organizers estimated more than 3,300 people showed up for the barbecue, though they originally had predicted only 1,000 to 2,000 would attend. In fact, so many hungry residents showed up to taste the barbecue at the “Throwdown” that portions eventually had to be rationed.

The meal featured pulled pork, chicken, potato salad, beans and cookies.

Eight of the top 10 pitmasters from across the country, including those from Missouri, Oklahoma and Maryland, competed for a trophy and “bragging rights.”

Diners and barbecue enthusiasts were joined at the park by celebrity designers from the hit ABC reality TV show.

The event was a fundraiser for members of the Allen Hill family, who are being featured on an episode of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.” All proceeds from the barbecue were to go to the TV show’s home build and other family living expenses.

Construction continues south of Ottawa on a home to be featured on “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.” The completion and reveal for the project is set for Saturday.
