Saxophone Rendezvous showcases area talent

By The Herald Staff

Music lovers can find double the pleasure Sunday.

The second annual Saxophone Rendezvous will feature two saxophone ensembles — the current Heartland Sax from Garnett and the River City Reeds from Lawrence.

The concert showcases the program recently performed by Heartland Sax and River City Reeds on the Showboat Branson Belle and featured by “Live-At-Branson” at Silver Dollar City, Jerry Lou Robinson, who plays alto saxophone for the Heartland Sax, said in a news release.

The concert, which includes religious, Dixieland and ragtime music, will be 5 p.m. Sunday at the First United Methodist Church, Second and Oak Streets, Garnett. It is free and open to the public. A carry-in potluck supper will follow the performance.

Heartland Sax had its beginnings 13 years ago in Paola, when retired music instructor Charles Kesinger formed the group from his private students. Kesinger moved to Garnett in the spring of 2007 and formed a new Heartland Sax, primarily of Garnett musicians.

The band’s current incarnation covers the range of saxophones and includes:

• Alto saxophone — Chris Agnew, a senior at Louisburg High School; Robinson; Miranda Rickel, Anderson County Jr.-Sr. High School sophomore; Haley Williams, Anderson County Jr.-Sr. High School 2009 graduate; and Rachel Guilfoyle, Prairie View High School 2009 graduate.

• Tenor saxophone — Kale Paquette, Ottawa High School freshman; Beth McCord and Jeff Russell.

• Baritone saxophone — Aubrey Elliott, Anderson County Jr.-Sr. High School eighth grade student; and Charles Kesinger.

River City Reeds musicians include John Bechen, alto and soprano saxophone; Elaine Roberts, alto saxophone; Clyde Bysom, tenor saxophone; and Kesinger, baritone saxophone.
