Fatal multi-vehicle wreck near Richmond

An Ottawa man has died and several other area residents were injured after a Saturday night wreck on U.S. 59, north of Richmond.

Jason D. Price, 29, Ottawa, was driving a 1984 Chevrolet pickup northbound at about 8 p.m. Saturday on U.S. 59, between Richmond and Ottawa, when his vehicle went left of center, striking the passenger side of a southbound 2003 Chrysler minivan driven by Ambrose L. Scheckel, 78, Richmond, according to a report from the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Scheckel, 78, Richmond, according to a report from the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Price’s vehicle then struck a southbound 1996 Dodge pickup, driven by Petite J. Duncan, 41, Linn Valley, head on, the report said.

Price was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt, the report said.

Scheckel and two passengers — Anna B. Scheckel, 76, and Lavern C. Scheckel, 83, both of Garnett — were injured and transported to Ransom Memorial Hospital in Ottawa. All three were wearing seat belts, the report said.

Duncan, and three passengers — Sabrina Spurlock, 2, Clarissa Spurlock, 3, and Andrew Duncan, 13, all of Linn Valley — were injured and transported to Ransom Memorial Hospital. Petite Duncan, Sabrina Spurlock and Clarissa Spurlock were wearing seat belts, according to the report. Andrew Duncan was not, the report said.

A fifth passenger in the Duncan vehicle, Jeffrey Gardner, 41, Louisburg, was transported to Overland Park Regional Medical Center. He was not wearing a seat belt, the report said.
