Wellsville teacher ‘shocked’ by award

By RACHEL HAWKINS, Herald Staff Writer

Dawn Rottinghaus loves teaching.

And after teaching business and technology courses at Wellsville High School for 15 years, she earned the Secondary Business Teacher of the Year award at the annual Mountain-Plains Business Education Association Conference this summer in South Dakota.

“I was shocked when I found out,” Rottinghaus said. “I was just dumfounded when they told me.”

The association includes representatives from Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Wyoming and business educators from Canada.

She found out in late May that she had won, so members of her family were able to see her accept the award.

Wellsville High School Principal Sheldon Pokorney said he is proud of the work Rottinghaus has done — both in and out of the classroom.

“We have a large, if not the largest, FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) groups in the state. And that’s all thanks to her,” Pokorney said. “Our kids always do well at the state level and at nationals.”

Pokorney said winning the award validates what Rottinghaus is about and the work she does for her students.

“She is just really good,” he said. “She does a lot of different things to help kids learn. She doesn’t use just one style. She tries to reach everyone.”

Rottinghaus qualified to compete for the national award that will be presented in March in San Diego at the National Business Education Association Convention, but she isn’t sure yet if she will apply for the national award.

“I just don’t think I have the credentials to go on and win the whole thing,” she said. “Maybe I’ll just go out on a high note.”

Rottinghaus said she loves to teach and is passionate about it.

“I know that I’m not here for each kid to love me, but to learn from me,” she said. “This award doesn’t mean that I am a better teacher than others because in my eyes, others should have won this. I believe there are good teachers all around us.”
