New option to ease child support payouts

By VICKIE MOSS, Herald Public Affairs Editor

Parents who receive child support can save a little time and money with a new payment option.

The Kansas Payment Center, which disperses child support payments for thousands of Kansas parents, announced recently a debit card option. Parents who sign up for the card can have child support payments electronically deposited to a Visa card.

The card, which is managed by JP Morgan Chase, allows parents to access their money more quickly than a paper check, Lori Hutchinson, a spokeswoman for the Kansas Payment Center said. It also can save bank and check-cashing fees; she said studies show the annual national average cost of bank account fees are about $190, while the average fees to cash checks or buy money orders for child support payments are $700 per year.

“This keeps money in your pocket,” Hutchinson said.

The card does have some fees, like 95 cents per month for paper statements. However, it’s possible to use the card without incurring any costs, Hutchinson said.

“We’re moving toward a more paperless society,” Hutchinson said. “Kansas is utilizing this option as well.”

Card holders can call to check their balances via a toll-free phone number or online.

To apply for the card, call (877) 572-5722 or go to www.kspaycenter.com to download an application. There is no charge to apply for the card and there is no credit check.
