‘Bull Mania,’ ESPN coming to Ottawa

By BRIAN WILLIAMS, Herald Staff Writer

Bulls, bulls, bulls.

Ottawa will be besieged with bulls Saturday night at the Franklin County Shrine Club’s “Bull Mania” at the Franklin County Fairgrounds, 17th and Elm streets.

“We’re having bulls from Nebraska, Missouri and all over Kansas. We’re having everyone bring in five to six bulls,” Delbert Breithaupt, organizer, said.

“It lets everyone show off their bulls,” he said.

The ultimate goal for someone who raises bulls for rodeo competition is to have a bull selected to be in the Professional Bull Riders Association, Breithaupt, who owns Lazy 8 Cattle Company of Wellsville, said.

Not only will the bulls be on stage, but ESPN, the 24-hour sports network, will shoot footage for a special on bull fighting.

“They’ll be looking at bullfighters, how they handle the bulls and how the bulls buck. Each bull is different,” Breithaupt, who has provided livestock for the Franklin County Shrine Club’s rodeos the past two years, said.

Breithaupt said ESPN will have four cameras placed around the arena, including one in the chutes.

“It’s pretty exciting for us to stumble into this,” he said.

The event starts with mutton busting at 6 p.m., followed by junior bull riders, which is open to 15 riders, from 11 to 13 years old, and finally the bull riders, which is open to 50 riders. Entertainment during intermission will be a boot scramble for children 7 and younger.

Admission is $10 for 13 and older, $5 for children from 6 to 12 years old and free for those 5 and younger.

All proceeds will go to the Franklin County Shrine Club. For more information, call (785) 248-9295.
