Recent low temperatures cap cooler-than-usual summer

By RACHEL HAWKINS, Herald Staff Writer

Ottawa and such surrounding areas as Lawrence and Pomona have been cooler and wetter than usual this summer.

Although specific numbers for Ottawa were not available from the National Weather Service, state climatologist Mary Knapp was able to look at surrounding areas, like Lawrence and Pomona, and make calculations using an experimental weather station.

“Lawrence and that area had the fourth coolest summer since 1939 this year,” she said.

In June, the average temperature for the Lawrence and Pomona areas, which includes Ottawa, was 75.2 degrees, which is 0.4 degrees higher than normal. July was 5.9 degrees cooler with an average of 74 degrees and August had an average of 73.1 degrees, which is 5.1 degrees cooler.

Knapp said that while these summer temperatures are not unusual, it is not a typical summer pattern.

“You would just typically expect July to be much hotter,” she said. “And we didn’t hit 100 at all, which is unusual. Typically, you expect to have one or two days in July where you hit 100.”

June had the highest summer temperatures, exceeding July and August, but precipitation for the summer was higher than normal in the area.

June saw 7.86 inches of precipitation, 2.68 inches above average. July received 4.59 inches, 1.11 inches above average, and in August the average was 6.51, 2.81 inches above the average 3.70 inches.

“July was really your only close to normal month,” Knapp said. “You guys in Ottawa are running cooler and wetter than usual, which isn’t a bad thing. It’s just not typical.”
