ESKRIDGE — West Franklin and Mission Valley have quite a rivalry going the past few seasons in volleyball. The two split matches last year and shared the Flint Hills League title.

The two teams had an early-season showdown for league supremacy Tuesday in Eskridge. Mission Valley found that extra gear in the late going of sets to sweep the Falcons.

West Franklin lost in three sets (25-23, 18-25, 29-27) and in two sets (25-21, 25-23).

“We had game point four times in the last game,” West Franklin coach Angie Corwine said. “We did not close it out.”

The two losses were big as Mission Valley has a two-game cushion on West Franklin for the league title.

“It was huge,” Corwine said. “The first match we laid it all out there.

“We did not respond very well [in the second match]. We had too many errors.”

West Franklin (2-2) plays Tuesday at home against Council Grove.

Emily Reed — 21 kills, 24 assists, 4 aces, 15 digs.

Shelbi Allen — 26 assists, 7 digs.
