Man facing murder charges in traffic death

By COURTNEY SERVAES, Herald Staff Writer

A 35-year-old Ottawa man accused of second-degree murder involving a traffic accident is set to appear in court next week.

Eric Bowers is scheduled to appear in court at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Anderson County District Court, 100 E. Fourth Ave., Garnett, to hear charges against him and of his rights to a preliminary hearing, counsel and bail.

Bowers faces charges of second-degree murder and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs following an automobile accident in  early June near the Anderson County line.

Maria Carmen Lear, 31, Ottawa, was killed in the accident after the automobile driven by Bowers struck a field entrance and flipped over, according to police reports.

Lear, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to reports from the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Bowers was arrested Wednesday after the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office issued a warrant for his arrest, Sgt. Brad Owens, of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, said.

“Basically it’s an Anderson County case,” Owens said. “They forwarded the warrant to us, and we went out and took him in without incident.”

Owens said the sheriff’s office transported Bowers to Anderson County, where he was booked at the Anderson County Jail on $100,000 bond.
