Plan for your pet

By LINDA BROWN

Most of us have a contingency plan ready to slip into place if we get hurt or sick while traveling but what happens if you’re traveling with a pet?

Do you have the necessary documentation, such as immunization records, if your pet would need to be boarded in an emergency situation?

What if Fido bites someone while you’re away from home?

What if he gets lost?

They’re not very pretty scenarios, true, but folks traveling with animals really should have a pet emergency management plan, just in case.

Wag’N Enterprises has a handy little record keeper called a Pet Passport. About the size of a human’s passport there are pages for the owner’s name, address, city, zip code and country of residence.

There’s a page for a photo of your pet, along with his name, breed, sex and coat description and microchip or tattoo number. These two pages are critical if your pet ever gets lost or you need to prove ownership.

The remaining pages are for your vet to fill in immunization history. After the initial health history is filled out you need to take the passport with you on every vet visit so the information remains current. The info isn’t considered valid unless your vet signs it after each entry.

The pet passport, which sells for $5.95, is also a great way to keep veterinary records all in one place even if you never travel with your faithful friend.

To get your pet passport go to www.wagn4u.com or call GNV Direct at (800) 803-4370.
