Candidates forum set for Tuesday

U.S. Rep. Nancy Boyda and Kansas Treasurer Lynn Jenkins will square off at the Ottawa candidates’ forum at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Franklin County Annex meeting room, 1428 S. Main St.
Democrat Boyda and her Republican challenger Jenkins have said they intend to be at the forum, which is an election year staple.
Most of the legislative candidates and all of the county commission and sheriff’s candidates have said they’ll attend, the Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce said.
The forum is put on by the chamber’s Legislative Action Committee, the Franklin County Farm Bureau and Warren Black American Legion Post 60.
Members of the audience will be offered an opportunity to submit written questions to candidates.
Candidates also will be allowed to submit one written question to their opponents.
The forum is earlier than normal because organizers wished to have it before the beginning of advance voting.
Besides the presidential race, Kansas voters will pick a U.S. Senator, Pat Roberts, Republican incumbent, is facing his most serious challenge from former U.S. Rep. Jim Slattery, Topeka Democrat. Randall Hodgkinson, Libertarian, and Joseph Martin, Reform, are also in the races.
In addition to Boyda and Jenkins, Robert Garrard, Gardner Libertarian, and Leslie Martin, Reform and wife of the Reform senatorial candidate, are also in the 2nd District Congressional race.
In state legislative races, Sen. Pat Apple, R-Louisburg, is being challenged by Andrew Rickel, D-Garnett, in the 12th Senate District. Sen. Derek Schmidt, R-Independence and who represents southwestern Franklin County, is unopposed.
In area state representative races, Democratic incumbent Bill Feuerborn, Garnett, is being challenged by Cara Polsley, Ottawa Republican, in the 5th House District, which includes southern Ottawa and much of southern Franklin County.
In the 10th House District, which includes northern Ottawa and northern Franklin County including Wellsville, Republican John Coen, rural Wellsville, and Tony Brown, D-Baldwin City, are seeking the seat being vacated by Tom Holland.
In the 5th District covering southwestern Franklin County, Republican incumbent Bill Otto is being challenged by Democrat Jon Dunbar, Colony.
In the 59th District, covering western Franklin County, Democrat Jim Irey, Melvern, and Will Prescott, R-Osage City, are vying for the seat vacated by Joe Humerickhouse.
Locally, contested races include a three-way county commission race involving incumbent Republican Ed Taylor being challenged by Democrat John “Butch” Riddle and independent Gene Hirt; and a race between Republican David Hood and independent Scott Barnhart. During the Republican primary, Hood upset incumbent Roy Dunn.
In the sheriff’s race, incumbent Republican Craig Davis is being challenged by Byron Goracke.
