Garrard tops OU at Tabor meet

By The Herald Staff

The experience and talent of Justin Garrard is paying off this season for the Ottawa University men’s cross country team.

The senior finished third Saturday in the Tabor College Invitational ran at Marion Reservoir.

Ottawa coach Kirk Wren said Garrard had a strong run and continues to improve.

The coach said most of the runners ran with heavy legs.

“We had rough week of training,” he said. “This is the time of year we increase the intensity.

Freshman Brandon Garcia was 23rd followed by freshman Jacob McMillan at 26th place. It was his first five-mile race.

“He has a lot of talent and will improve as he gets racing experience,” Wren said.

Ottawa finished sixth out of 13 squads.

“Our top five need to race closer together,” Wren said.”I am pleased with our overall performance with the increased mileage for the week. This proves that OU can race and compete while being fatigued.”

Junior Hillary Bruce paced the Lady Braves in 69th place.

“We only raced four OU ladies this week,” Wren said. “They are training hard and we are getting closer to having everyone healthy by the next meet.”

Ottawa competes Saturday in the Haskell Invitational.
