DONNA JUNE (THOMPSON) RICH

Donna June (Thompson) Rich, age 93, died Sept. 26, 2009, at Ottawa Retirement Village, where she has lived since June of 2003. She has donated her remains to the University of Kansas School Of Medicine. Burial will be later at the McPherson Cemetery, McPherson, Kan.

She was born Jan. 30, 1916, near Garnett, Kan., to Charles W. and Trella E (Caldwell) Thompson. The family later moved to Westphalia, Kan., where she graduated from High School in 1934.

She taught school near Westphalia for two years. She married Joe A. Rich on Aug. 17, 1935, in Blue Mound, Kan. They lived in Westphalia until the fall of 1937 when they moved to McPherson, Kan. She graduated from McPherson College, received her masters and specialist degrees from Emporia State College. She retired as a teacher from the McPherson Public Schools with her husband in 1974. After retirement they spent most of their time traveling with their Airstream, spending the winters in Texas. Joe died in November of 1986 while they were in Texas. She lived in McPherson until moving to Ottawa in 1998.

She was a lifelong member of the Order of the Easter Star receiving her 75-year pin in 2008. She was one of the founders of the Rainbow Girls in McPherson in 1949. She was a Girl Scout leader, past Worthy Matron of the OES McPherson and Grand Conductress in 1953.

Survivors include two sons; Joe D., of Ottawa, and Craig T. (Crystal) of Wichita; four grandchildren, Joan Curtin, (Robert), Kansas City, Mo., Bryan Rich, Williamsburg, Jeff Rich (Elizabeth), Wichita, Kan., and Mandy Lee (Adam) of South Hutchinson, Kan.; five great-grandchildren, Sara Rich, Hertslaan, Belgium, Amy Rich of Lincoln, Neb., Ty Rich (Katie) of White City, Kan., and Chase and Alex of South Hutchinson; two sisters, Margaret Shaughnessey, Ottawa, and Helen Forsythe of Wichita, Kan.; one brother, Charles (Bud) and his wife Inabel (Pete) Thompson of Independence, Kan.; many nieces, nephews and a host of friends. She also was preceded in death by a sister Claire. Memorials may be sent to the First Christian Church, 1045 S. Hickory St., Ottawa KS 66067.
