Ottawa forwards turn dangerous in win over Cards

By The Herald Staff

EUDORA — Forwards main goal on a soccer team is to score goals. They play at the top of the formation and usually get the ball in front of the net.

The Ottawa High School forwards were deadly in the Cyclones’ 4-0 victory Tuesday over Eudora in Eudora.

They combined for three assists and three goals.

“They are even more dangerous when they go to goal and find open players,” Ottawa coach Glen Cahill said.

Senior Kameron Cole had two assists and a goal. Eric Messenger scored a goal and had an assist. Tyler Clancy assisted  on Messenger’s tally.

Cahill made it a point of emphasis for Ottawa to work on its game against winless Eudora.

“We used the opportunity to work on possession, stringing passes together,” he said. “We came out and had some early opportunities [to score].”

That set the tone as Ottawa dominated play throughout the match.

Cahill said Ottawa has worked on crossing and finishing. He saw a lot of that against the Cardinals.

The first goal came off a corner kick. Cole hammered the ball from the corner to the net and defender Shane Steelman knocked it in to give Ottawa a 1-0 lead.

Messenger’s score made it 2-0 at halftime.

Cole’s cross set up Braden Ward’s score to give Ottawa a 3-0 lead. The final goal came off a nice run from the back.

Defender Ian Sutton started the run up the field. He passed the ball to the corner to Messenger, who drew the defense toward him and slid the ball to Cole for a score.

The defense was stellar. Keeper Scott Stoops made three saves, none of which were difficult.

Cahill said Stoops continues to be a vocal leader in the back of the defense.

“I was pleased with the guys performance,” Cahill said.

Ottawa (6-3) takes a five-match winning streak into Thursday’s home match against De Soto. The match will be 4 p.m. played on the grass field at Ottawa University.

The Ottawa junior varsity won 3-0 behind two goals from Shawn Turner. Ryan Cook scored the other goal. Garrett Brown had all three assists.
