Battle for title

By The Herald Staff

The Ottawa High School volleyball team has not been in many tight matches this season.

The Cyclones found themselves in a battle Saturday in the finals of the OHS Invitational with Mill Valley.

Ottawa had topped Mill Valley twice this season, including earlier Saturday in pool play.

Ottawa rallied from a deficit in the third game to nip Mill Valley (25-16, 25-27, 25-23) to win its home tournament.

“It was great to win the tournament, and we were able to learn a few things about ourselves that will help us in the next few weeks,” Ottawa coach Kendra Oberzan said. “We’ve been having a tough time maintaining our composure and confidence in tight matches, and the final was a good test for us.

“The team did a good job of staying aggressive at the end of the match. We had fallen behind late in the third game, but were able to rally back and take the lead behind excellent defensive and offensive efforts. If we want to have success in the next few weeks, we have to build on that performance and continue to develop the kind of mental toughness that allows us to play our best in pressure situations.”

Ottawa won all five matches in the tourney. In pool play, Ottawa downed Olathe North (25-9, 25-12), Kansas City Northeast (25-3, 25-0) and Mill Valley (25-23, 25-22).

Ottawa toppled Emporia, 25-12, 25-18, in the semifinals.

The Cyclones (20-4) plays Tuesday at Gardner.
