U.S. 59: New route will follow familiar path

By JENALEA MYERS, Herald Staff Writer

Although a new U.S. 59 will exist, the path of the highway won’t be too different.

The selected location places the highway about 300 feet east of the current U.S. 59, according to the Kansas Department of Transportation’s Web site.

The project alignment begins at I-35, about one mile north of the existing K-68 interchange, and extends northwesterly to the existing U.S. 59, about 3 ½ miles north of Ottawa. It then proceeds northeasterly until it is located about one mile east of the current U.S. 59. It continues northward, bypasses Pleasant Grove, and then curves to the northwest and connects with the four-lane section of U.S. 59 south of Lawrence, KDOT’s Web site states.

The freeway will be about 18 miles long and generally will parallel existing U.S. 59, except where it bypasses to the east of Pleasant Grove and near Ottawa. At Ottawa, the plan is for the new U.S. 59 to connect with I-35 at a new interchange northeast of the city.

Howard Lubliner, KDOT road designer, said the freeway will cross two railroad lines, including the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway and Midland Railway. While Midland runs from Baldwin City to the Ottawa Junction, the BNSF runs as far east as Alabama and all the way to the West Coast.

“There will be a vertical change in the highway to accommodate hills and valleys, railroad and side road crossings,” Lubliner said.
