Counselor says school supplies difficult for some to afford

By COURTNEY SERVAES, Herald Staff Writer

Amy Wright says more and more families are struggling to come up with school supplies.

That’s why Wright, counselor at Wellsville Elementary School, said the district is trying to take advantage of fall sales on these much- needed items.

“It is very important for the self-esteem of each student to feel like they have their own supplies and backpack,” she said. “We try very hard to make sure each of our students has what they need.”

Wright said school supplies are greatly needed at the start of the school year, but the need for supplies doesn’t stop there — students use these supplies throughout the entire year. Many of these supplies are on sale now that school has started.

“With family budgets the way they are in this economy, it seemed like a good idea to take advantage of the sales,” she said.

In order to accommodate students and families who might not be able to afford supplies, Wright said the district is collecting them throughout the month of October.

Such supplies as glue, paper, pencils, scissors and crayons are needed and can be donated to any of the district’s schools, she said. Wright added that many families already have made generous donations to the district.

“Yes, this is a tough time, but at the same time we have people stepping up to help out,” she said. “I’m thankful to be working in such a generous and caring community.”
