Eagles, Falcons sweep league foes

WELLSVILLE — The Wellsville High School volleyball team remained perfect in league play Tuesday with a home sweep.

Wellsville defeated Jayhawk-Linn (25-21, 25-11) and Osawatomie (25-17, 25-21).  

Wellsville (17-11, 6-0) plays Tuesday at home against Jayhawk-Linn and Central Heights.

Statistical leaders

Kayla Patton — 16 kills.

Madison Chambers — 24 assists, 2 stuff blocks, 3 aces.

Ashley Bolen — 12 kills.

JV splits

The Wellsville junior varsity split its matches. Wellsville downed Jayhawk-Linn, 22-25, 25-9, 15-13 and lost Osawatomie, 26-24, 25-15.

Tyler Martin had 24 points in the two matches. Monica Adams was the leader in passing. Katelyn Barthol had four stuff blocks.

Wellsville JV (8-14) plays Saturday at the Osawatomie tourney.

Falcons sweep foe

A tired West Franklin High School volleyball team Tuesday found a way to sweep Mission Valley, 25-16, 25-17 and 25-27, 25-14, 25-19.

The Falcons, coming off two straight weekends of tournaments, played without a starter and several of the players spent all day Tuesday teaching young kids at the “Day at the Farm.”

“We still dug in and got it done,” West Franklin coach Angie Corwine said. “We looked tired. It is important [to win].”

Kylee Piersol was out because of illness. Emma Brann stepped in and gave the Falcons a lift.

Corwine said Jessica Cates and Ashley McClain, who combined for 25 kills, turned in good performances.

“They dug us out of holes,” the coach said. “They got it done.”

West Franklin (16-11) plays Tuesday at home against Council Grove.

Statistics

Rose Griffin — 16 kills, 6 digs, 2.64 passing average.

Jessica Cates — 15 kills.

Ashley McClain — 10 kills.

Heather Greer — 7 kills, 6 digs, 28 assists.

Emma Brann — 6 kills, 9 digs, 2.63 passing average.

Heather Sleichter — 26 assists.
