Ottawa coach looks for more consistent play

By Greg Mast/Herald Sports Editor

Which team will show up? Sometimes the answer is not known until the play begins for the Ottawa High School volleyball team.

The Cyclones did not play up to their standard in the first two games Thursday against Basehor-Linwood.

“A different team shows up,” Ottawa coach Kendra Oberzan said.

Prior to the third game, Oberzan told her players she wanted to see the other team.

She did as Ottawa controlled play early, but could not hold on and lost in three games on senior night.

Basehor-Linwood won 25-16, 25-17, 25-21.

“Our ball control was terrible the first two games,” Oberzan said. “I know they know how to pass. It is not [always] that bad.

“I want us to play to the level that we are capable of.”

Big scoring runs fueled Basehor-Linwood in all three games.

Ottawa was within 5-4 in the first game when the Bobcats scored eight of the next nine points to take a 12-5 lead and later 15-7.

Ottawa made a run to come within 16-11 and 19-14. The Bobcats won six of the final eight points for the first game victory.

Ottawa started well in the second game, going up 4-1. Basehor tied it at 6-6 and went on 11-1 run to take a 17-7 lead. Ottawa rallied back, 21-15.

The third game saw Ottawa take control early and lead until late in the game.

Ottawa led 5-2 and increased the lead to 11-5. Basehor-Linwood then ran off nine unanswered points to take a 14-11 lead.

Ottawa tied it at 14-14 and 16-16. Ottawa pushed its lead to 21-18, but Basehor scored the final seven points to end the match.

“They had a couple of good servers,” Oberzan said. “We need to be able to stop that. It was so fast.”

The coach felt the players came out tight to open the match.

“We have to learn to come out and play consistent and finish,” Oberzan said. “We have to play through [the mistakes]. It will come back around.”

It was the final home match for seniors Alyssa Currier, Brittny Harms and Taylor Koberlein. Each player was introduced with their parents following the match.

Mirror Tourneys

The Frontier League tournament and the following week 4A sub-state will have most of the same field.

On Saturday, the league tourney will be in Louisburg. Ottawa’s pool consists of De Soto, Louisburg and Paola. Then the teams will play in a bracket in the afternoon.

All but Gardner will be in the sub-state tourney in Spring Hill. Santa Fe Trail will be the eighth team.

“It is an interesting situation,” Oberzan said about the similar fields. “It is wide open. We know who will be there. We need to go out and play up to our ability. Play hard the entire tournament.”

Ottawa brings an 11-19 mark into the league tourney.
