Area church reports theft of thousands of dollars

RANTOUL — The Franklin County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the theft of money from the Rantoul Community Church.

The money was reported missing by church officials last week, Sheriff Craig Davis said Wednesday.

According to church members who asked to remain anonymous, a trustee was suspected of embezzling thousands of dollars from the church over several years.

Davis said that according to reports that his office has received, at least $35,000 is missing.

Davis said the case was under investigation and declined to comment on details.

There have been no arrests yet, he said.

It's a sad day when someone is pathetic enough to steal from their church. Here's a thought, perhaps it's time to start auditing everyone, everywhere. Sad but true, that's what this world is coming to, first the middle school, now the church...Perhaps it's time to pack up the family and move to the mountains. And just when you thought it was safe to live in a small, hometown community.
