BEHIND THE WHEEL: A muscular monster on wheels

By LINDA BROWN, Behind the Wheel

If you need a truck that works as hard as you do, the 2006 Dodge Ram 3500, 4 WD dually we’re driving this week is the truck for you.

On sale today at Crist Auto and RV Sales for $24,888, during the Fall-A-Palooza event, this truck has a towing ability of 15,850 pounds and a max payload of 23,000, making it capable of handling any type of job you could throw at it.

One look and you know this is a work truck. Its body is muscular. The big wheels and tires and high ground clearance are a dead-giveaway as to the purpose of this bad boy.

It’s not difficult to imagine its bed full of tools and supplies — or a trailer hooked to its hitch — but this truck goes beyond functional. The quad cab easily hauls two rows of passengers in a pretty decent ride.

The leather seats are stiff but comfortable; the floorboards are washable vinyl. The dash features big-dial instruments and controls are within easy reach for the driver. This truck offers an AM/FM CD player stereo system, tilt and cruise.

Big and diesel doesn’t necessarily have to mean noisy and in this Ram 3500 the common rail fuel system makes it run quiet. No shouting-to-be-heard is required, as this truck takes you down the highway in quiet comfort.

Powered by a 5.9-liter, 325 horsepower Cummins turbo diesel, this truck runs at a very low RPM to reach peak torque, and, in a work horse like this, torque is all that matters.

The New Venture heavy duty 6-speed manual transmission is the best in its class, as is the Dana 80 2-ton rear axel.

This truck wants to go; it wants to work; it wants to run.

The front of the truck has plenty of chrome and a pair of heavy duty tow rings that will come in handy for pulling — or being pulled.

The back of the truck reveals the factory-installed bed liner to protect the bed from scratches and dings and a B&W turnover ball.

While you’re test driving this power horse, check out the oversized power side mirrors with the convex inserts. Leave them horizontal for normal driving but flip them up for better visibility when towing; a pretty cool — and useful — feature.

After you’ve taken your test drive and are waiting for your paperwork to process, register to win one of several door prizes being given away at Crist’s Fall-A-Palooza, including a gas grill.

If your timing is good, you’ll be there between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. when brats and burgers are being served.

And, don’t forget to take a minute to say “Hey” to the sales team, Jeff Peine, Brad Medlen, Ed Collins, Brice Dryden and Russell Geist.

Come on out to Crist Auto and RV Sales, I-35 and K-68 highway, today, where the prices are falling faster than the leaves.
