DONALD W. SMITH

Donald W. Smith, 77, Ottawa, died Thursday, Oct. 15, 2009, at Richmond Care Center, Richmond. Private family services will be at a later date.

He was born May 1, 1932, in Ottawa to Lee and Alma (Gebhard) Smith.

He was a lifelong Franklin County resident.

He owned and operated Don’s Auto Repair in Ottawa from 1973 to 1997. From July 1997 to March 2008, he was a driver for Franklin County Senior Center and also a delivery driver for Kramer Pharmacy from October 2006 to January 2008.

He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from Oct. 27, 1952, to Oct. 14, 1954.  He earned the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation and Good Conduct Medal. He was released from active military service and transferred to the Army Reserves to complete eight years of service.

He was a member of Franklin County Blazer Shrine Club, Ottawa Lodge #18, A.F. & A.M., Abdallah Shrine Temple, Ottawa Antique Auto Club, Ottawa Promenaders and Ottawa TNT Club.

He married Opal J. Stoffer Jan. 3, 1957, in Ottawa.  She preceded him in death March 20, 1997. He married JoAnn Elise (Ogg) Kotorakos April 28, 2001, in Williamsburg.  She survives of the home.

Other survivors include son,  Tony Smith, Olpe; daughters, April Zook, Ottawa, and Annette Paugh, Richmond; son, Doug Morgan, Pomona; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Alma (Gebhard) Smith; infant daughter, Andrea Lea; 12 brothers and sisters, including a twin sister, DeLaine Smith.

Cremation is planned.
