Eudora’s four-prong running attack, mixed in with a nice passing game, gave the Ottawa defense fits Friday night at Steve Grogan Stadium.
Ottawa gave up 50 straight points to fall to the state-ranked Cardinals, 50-6.
“It was ugly,” Ottawa coach Marc Bergan said. “They are really good. We knew that. They were big and physical. We could not stop them. They do what they do well.”
The game began with a bang. Both teams scored quickly before the fans even warmed up their seats.
On the second play of the game, Ottawa’s Andre Lewis caught an 86-yard touchdown pass from Taylor Graf. It was 6-0 with 10:57 left in the first quarter.
Eudora answered right back as quarterback Andrew Ballock — on the first play from scrimmage — ran 69 yards for a score. Eudora led 7-6 after three offensive plays.
The Cardinals kept their offense rolling, while Ottawa’s was stymied.
“We had good pass protection,” Bergan said. “We had guys open ... we just did not hit them.”
Ottawa forced a fumble on Eudora’s second possession to stop a drive.
Then the Cardinals revved it up, scoring touchdowns on their next six possessions — four in the first half and two in the third quarter.
When the dust settled with three minutes remaining in the third quarter, Eudora had a commanding 50-6 lead.
“They kicked our butts,” Bergan said.
The fourth quarter saw both teams empty the bench. Several Ottawa youngsters received extended time against the Eudora reserves.
“We got a lot of younger kids playing time,” Bergan said.
Sophomore Tanner Wright rushed for 42 yards.
Ottawa (2-6, 0-2) closes the regular season 7 p.m. Thursday at home against Santa Fe Trail (0-8, 0-2). The Chargers lost to Baldwin.
