Volunteers to mark ‘Make a Difference Day’ with community service projects

By The Herald Staff

Ottawa students and others will spend Friday making a difference.

Volunteers, including students at Ottawa High School, will participate in Make a Difference Day.

The day is the largest community service effort in the nation, rallying corporations, government leaders, charitable organizations and everyday Americans into action on one day.

Although the national observation is Saturday, local students will take part in the event between 9 a.m. to noon Friday when they are out of school.

Some of the events planned by the Ottawa Volunteer Center include:

• Rotary Club, Ottawa Optimists and Wal-Mart Distribution Center associates will join with students and staff at Eisenhower, Eugene Field and Garfield elementary schools to spruce up their playgrounds with huge paintings of U.S. maps and/or regulation size basketball courts.

• Ottawa Middle School Kay Club will conduct a canned food drive for ECKAN’s Food Pantry at Country Mart.

• Ottawa High School students will use the day to compete for points toward a year-long class competition. So far, 71 high school students are signed up to volunteer in the following projects being coordinated by the Ottawa Volunteer Center and OHS Student Body President Abby Guenther:

• Games and activities with COF Training Services Inc. consumers at the high school.

• Baking treats and delivering Meals on Wheels.

• Donation collection at both Ottawa Dollar General Stores for “I Care” kits for Womens Transitional Care Services.

• Create electronic life-stories from interviews with local veterans, sponsored by East Central Kansas Agency on Aging.

• Paint over graffiti at Ottawa Skate Park with Teen Court of the 4th Judicial District.

• Cyclone mural on Ottawa High School campus.

• Paint concrete street markers surrounding the middle and high schools.

• Create ceramic bowls for an Empty Bowls event in January.
