Despite winning the Republican primary, Franklin County Sheriff Jeff Curry may yet have some competition in the general election.

Philip Ray Brown, Ottawa, posted on The Ottawa Herald’s social media website that he was officially running a write-in campaign for county sheriff.

“I Philip Brown Running as a Write in for Sheriff of Franklin County want to put Trust and Integrity back in to the Sheriff Office so our Community can have Faith that the Leadership will not sway,” the comment, posted Tuesday night, stated.

Brown has not been available for comment in regards to his campaign. Brown has less than two weeks to garner enough votes to defeat Curry, who won the Republican primary by winning more than 50 percent of the total votes.

County elections officer Shari Perry said as a write-in candidate, Brown does not have to file anything with her office. He might be contacted by the Kansas Governmental Ethics Commission, she said, if he takes in donor money or spends more than $500 on his campaign.

“He will have to file a campaign expenditure report if he takes in donations just like every other candidate,” Perry, who has seen Brown’s campaign signs around town, said.

Write-in campaigns are not common, the longtime elections officer said, although they have been done in Franklin County in the past.

“It’s not real popular, it’s a hard thing to do, a hard thing to win,” Perry, who also is the county clerk, said.

There were 214 Democratic party write-in votes cast in the August primary election. The general election is Nov. 7.
