No chicken coop? How about a co-op?

By VICKIE MOSS, Herald Public Affairs Editor

Ottawa City Manager Richard Nienstedt may have found a solution to the city’s chicken dilemma — a chicken co-op.

Not a coop, a co-op, as in a chicken cooperative.

Planning commissioners shared some lighthearted banter as they discussed a citizen’s request to modify the city’s ordinance against allowing chickens within the city limits. It’s an issue that can get emotional, Wynndee Lee, city planning and zoning director, said previously.

Planning commissioners discussed a variety of chicken-related issues during their regular meeting Monday.

That’s when Nienstedt facetiously tossed out a suggestion to build a chicken park instead of a dog park.

Lee suggested he purchase 10 acres just outside the city limits and rent out space for chickens.

“That’s not a bad business idea,” planning commissioner Richard Warren said.
