Braves soccer falls into tie with Tabor

HILLSBORO — The Ottawa University men’s soccer team fell into a second-place tie with Tabor after falling 3-1 Saturday to the Bluejays in Hillsboro.
Both teams are 6-2 in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference and the Tabor victory gave the Kansas Wesleyan men the KCAC regular-season title.

Ottawa started fast by scoring its lone goal in the ninth minute. Kyler Grimes-Hopkins scored his fourth goal in three matches. The forward was named the KCAC offensive player of the week with his four goals and an assist. He scored the game-winning goal with seven seconds left in overtime against Friends.
Tabor came alive in the second half, scoring three goals in the victory. Tabor led in shots 22-6 and had a 16-5 lead in shots on goal. Ottawa goalkeeper Drinnan Sante had 11 saves.
The Lady Braves nailed down the No. 2 seed in the KCAC postseason tournament with a 2-0 win over Tabor. Ottawa (6-2) trails nationally-ranked and KCAC champion Kansas Wesleyan (8-0).
Ottawa has won three straight matches since the 1-0 loss to Wesleyan.
The Lady Braves took the lead on Autumn Surage’s goal at the 1:45 mark in the first half. Surage scored her second goal in the 57th minute of the second half.
Ottawa controlled play with a 21-4 lead in shots and a 13-1 advantage in shots on goal. Ottawa goalkeeper Erin Stengel earned her ninth shutout of the season with one save.
Sophomore defender Jordan Tapia was named the KCAC defensive player of the week.
Ottawa plays today at home against Bethany College. The Ottawa seniors for both teams will be honored.
