RUBY ADELINE KERSHAW

Ruby Adeline Kershaw, age 102, passed away Oct. 31, 2009, at the Leonardville Nursing Home, Leonardville, Kan.

She was born March 10, 1907, at Olsburg, Kan., the daughter of Walter and Hulda (Nordgren) Barkyoumb.

She attended Strickler’s Business College in Topeka, worked in the Olsburg Bank, obtained a Kansas teaching certificate and taught school at Dry Creek near Garrison, Olsburg and District 108 near Stockdale.

She was married June 26, 1929, at Olsburg, to Charles Vincent Kershaw.  He preceded her in death in April 1975.  She also was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Roy, Harold and Veldon Barkyoumb, and two sisters, Marion Kleweno and Eunice Frank.

She had lived in Pottawatomie and Riley counties for all of her life, except for several years in Ottawa in Franklin County.

She had always been involved in her church work at Garrison, Westmoreland and later at Trinity United Methodist Church in Ottawa, and was active in the Pride Program at Westmoreland.

Survivors include a daughter, Marlene Schwartz and her husband, Jerry, of Randolph, Kan., a son, Charles Vincent Kershaw Jr., and his wife, Carolyn, of Young, Ariz., and a daughter, Sandra Sylvester and her husband, Russ, of Ottawa, Kan., eight grandchildren, Dave Schwartz, Jean Berstler and husband, George, and Jan Dreith and husband, Jon, all of Randolph, Penni Lawson and husband, Phil, Chandler, Ariz., Karisa Kershaw, Scottsdale, Ariz., Kay Selman and husband, Mike, Kris Wallace and husband, Terry, and Ron Sylvester and wife, Angela, all of Ottawa, and 16 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Ottawa, and funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, at the Holmes-Pfeifley Funeral Home in Riley, Kan., where the family will receive friends for one hour before the funeral service.

A memorial has been established for the Trinity United Methodist Church at Ottawa.
