Sheriff wins in landslide

By JENALEA MYERS, Herald Staff Writer

Franklin County Sheriff Craig Davis said he was confident going into Tuesday’s election — and for good reason.

Davis defeated Democrat Byron Goracke in a 8,211 to 2,863 landslide victory, with results showing 170 write-in votes.

“I was confident the citizens were happy with the operation of the sheriff’s office,” he said. “Obviously they’re happy, judging by the vote.”

The jail and the juvenile detention center were the main issues in the race, and they weren’t issues that the two sheriff candidates agreed upon.

“I don’t think anyone is in favor of a new jail,” Davis said.

Davis has said he doesn’t want to build a new jail, but believes it probably is inevitable given the population projections for the county. A new jail likely would be located in the downtown area, he said.

During his campaign, Goracke said he didn’t support a new jail, and believed all other options must be exhausted. If the county built a jail, it should be a smaller facility located in a rural area, where land prices are cheaper, he said.

Davis said the economy is one thing that worries him going into his next term.

“We’re doing OK now,” he said. “When the economy goes down there tends to be more crime. I don’t know if that will happen this time. We’ll just have to wait and see.”

Davis said he’ll continue to work on computerizing the county’s law enforcement record system and installing computer terminals in every county patrol car. The project is being jointly done with the Ottawa and Wellsville police departments.

Getting citizens involved in neighborhood watch programs is something he’s interested in, he said.

“They’ll be able to help be our eyes and ears,” he said.

Davis, who has served in the county sheriff’s department his entire career, serving as patrolman, jailer, dispatch and administrator, thanked his supporters who helped him along the way.

“I’m very appreciative that people have confidence in me and the sheriff’s office,” he said.

Davis defeated Jim Honn and Tony LeMaster in the August primary. Goracke ran unopposed.

Davis : Wednesday, November 05, 2008 4:11 PM

All I expect is for Davis to do his job correctly. I was rasied by a Fairway Kansas Police Officer and think that the deals people get, the snitches, the drug dealer who don't get busted and the people who have lived here all their lives, raised their kids here, paid their taxes here should get a bit more respect from you Davis, drug test your police officers, it's no seceret that there are dirty cops in Ottawa, so do your job! and whoever told Mr. Davis to go to ---- shame on you! If you don't like his agenda tell him your problem opposed to saying stupid stuff like that!

Bashing Davis : Wednesday, November 05, 2008 5:19 PM

Craig Davis is an honorable man who has helped many residents of our county over the years. He doesn't deserve the kind of tongue-lashing he's getting on this Web site. It's downright disgustig. Trying to ruin this man because of a speeding ticket or other past "wrong" of your own isn't a good enough reason for such talk.

I have known Craig for over 30 years and he is a fine man. He reminds me a lot of the great Sheriff Rex Bowling.

RE: Davis and Re-Election : Wednesday, November 05, 2008 8:33 PM

I do think that the go to hell comment was juvenile. I want to ask though why anyone assume that whomever posts comments here that are negative are a result of a ticket, or repercussion of law enforcement? Unless you know the poster of the comment, you wouldn't have that as "Facts." My biggest concern for his new term are several. First and foremost I worry that his health will carry him through. He does not look healthy. What will we do if his health fails and he has to leave office? Oh boy oh boy...Next on my list, is all this hype over the jail situation and juvenile detention center. I am not going to type out my lengthy feelings or what I think should happen, as I have done this time and again. Suffice it to say that there are things that can be done without spending lots of money, moving anyone, and creating new jobs. I know that Mr. Davis will do our county right. I didn't vote for him because I don't think he has or can do the job, I think it's time for a fresh face to come in with a new outlook and ideas. I honestly wish that Jim Honn would have made it through to this election. I wish Mr. Davis all the best in his upcoming term. I do feel safe living in Franklin County and am thankful for his service and officers. I just have my concerns. I also would like to see less petty and juvenile ignorance on the comments part of the herald online. If we don't take care of and treat it right, we'll lose the right to add our comments. I appreciate and enjoy adding in my 2 cents!

Dirty Cops : Thursday, November 06, 2008 10:02 AM

Ok it's his Sheriff Deputies that have told me this, plus people in the S.R.S. building, some officals in this town that I will not mention and for everyone's information I DID talk to the DEA and the Police about my concerns, I did my job now Davis needs to investigate the Officers in Ottawa, it's his job. Yes I too have concerns about his age and people don't seem to realize most sheriff's retire or die while being Sheriff, nobody wants to change things and the people who have lived here all their lives and have paid thier taxes might just be living next to a rental house with a meth cook, why can't the DEU bust the people they KNOW are dealing in this town and protect the rest of us from their stealing and criminal ways to support their habit?

NO MORE DAVIS : Thursday, November 06, 2008 1:15 PM

Under Davis' tenure as Sheriff the drug problem in this county has sky rocketed. Talk to some of the local cops, they'll tell you about meth labs and drug arrests that go un published; Convieniently not reported to the paper for the Daily report. Had Gorake been elected the city police department would have been put in line and there would have been tougher enforcement of drug related activities. What has Davis done for us in the past four years? NOTHING NEW!! Druggies are still stealing stuff from my business every weekend and I never notice any increase in police patrols. Davis is reactive to crime only, he has no desire to be proactive and prevent crime from happening. Use common sence people... Its drugs that are killing this county. They steal to get money for dope, they shoot at eachother over there dope, they get in fights over there dope, they kill fellow county citizens becasue there high when there driving. Why would you want to keep a Sheriff who has no desire to actively employ his drug detectives?

Police Officers : Thursday, November 06, 2008 3:25 PM

Only a coward would make a comment and not sign their name. Because something is said does not make it so. Remember your distaste for law enforcement the next time you call on them for help.

Response to "Dirty Cops" : Thursday, November 06, 2008 3:41 PM

One has to wonder how many times you have been arrested! Please, bring your proof and let dice roll! I welcome any proof you have. Why would you make up such garbage, get a life.

I have NEVER been arested : Thursday, November 06, 2008 5:01 PM

OK know your facts I am a cops Daughter and an adult and never have been arrested!!I think you must be a cop because you assume too much about my post Jill is my name and I am not afraid of calling a spade a spade! I called and talked to the DEU agent and I know many drug dealers in this town and I have NEVER done any dope so before you can make untrue statements get the facts! Ottawa is full of snitches, meth heads, crack heads and I am tired of the deals they all get opposed to doing hard time, slap them hard the first time and maybe there won't be a second time of making the same mistake! Drugs don't just hurt the druggie they destoy Family's I know because my Daughter had a drug problem and it was a rough road for me as a Parent. I know because I lived through her choices, so shut your pie hle and tell Davis to clean up this town and have it become a safe place to live and attend school.

The Truth Behind Davis : Thursday, November 06, 2008 5:12 PM

Ok All you republican supporting know it alls need to listen up. To whomever made the comment about Davis being like Bowling. No where near. You tell me how. How do I know this. I worked under both. What sickens me the most is the Deputies having sex with married wemon in the back of patrol cars wile on duty and them coming in and braging about it. Deputies having sex with married dispatchers and nothing done about it. Dont tell me Davis knew nothing about it cause I am the one thatfound the open email from a dispatcher to a deputy and printed it and too it to Davis. Was anything done no! Davis wile on the job runs FBI tripple I backround checks for the renters association. This is a strict violation of FBI policy. Davis has a uncertified group of individuals as reserve Sheriffs he says are helping with patrols in thehigh gas price times. How can an uncertified officer be runing patrols. Armed I might add. Last I checked you had to be certified by KLETC. Ok I could go on and on but im tired of reading about how great Davis. He is not as good as everyone thinks.

Hello Herald...This Is Kettle... : Thursday, November 06, 2008 8:59 PM

Delted posts... : Sunday, November 09, 2008 9:07 PM

Maybe instead of delteing posts about dirty cops, the Hearld should try to pursue the story... Its appearent several people feel cops in this area are dirty and it looks like people have tried to take appropriate action... Why doesn't the Hearld do its job and investigate and uncover a story??

Great Idea.... : Sunday, November 09, 2008 10:58 PM

FRSO...the problem is this. The editor chooses to do as she pleases. She can support who she wants. And she slings hash on who she wants. She gets away with it. So, she apparently has the right to delete what she wants when it comes to her man (Davis that is). It is sickening if you ask me. Harris enterprises needs to know about it. What I'd like to know as well is how come Cleon Rickel isn't with the Herald anymore. Funny how he isn't employed there anymore. Kinda makes you wonder if it had anything to do with the fact that he didn't join the "Jeanne Sharp supports Davis and Taylor" drive. Cleon was not a dirty player. And he chose to play by the rules. I think you're right that someone needs to open up an investigation. I don't have any hard facts on Davis and what goes on there, but I am pretty sure that the things you say should be looked into. Not only that, but how come certain people are moving up the totem pole? And are we grooming meathead for potentially taking over if something happens to Davis? I'm sure you know who I'm referring to when I say meathead. I've posted comments about him using his SUV to drive around his flock of kids, and I got some interesting feedback on that one. How did I know was one of the questions, well DUH, I saw it with my own 2 eyes, otherwise I wouldn't have said it. There are some pretty ignorant people in this town. I certainly hope that if something ever does happen with Davis that meathead doesn't get the job. Can you just imagine? I'm like you, I could go on and on, but it only causes me to stoop to a level I'm not allowing myself to.

MeatHead!!! : Monday, November 10, 2008 3:14 PM

I'm just glad to see I'm not the only one who refers to the great Mr. Dean as meathead!! From what I can tell, your right... MeatHead is being groomed for Sheriff. Can you imagine this county being protected by MeatHead! I can't believe the person who posted about people sleeping with employees forgot to mention him...
