Local votes on Kansas candidates mostly match state results

In all but one race for the Kansas Legislature, Franklin Countians voted similar to other Kansans.

Kansas House

• 5th District state representative — Incumbent Bill Feuerborn (D-Garnett) defeated Cynthia “Cara” Polsley (R-Ottawa) 2,433 to 2,267 in the county. Feuerborn won 4,580 to 3,018 districtwide, which includes southern Ottawa and much of southern Franklin County.

Feuerborn is the ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee. He has served in the legislature since 1994.

• 9th District state representative — Incumbent Bill Otto (R-LeRoy) defeated Jon Dunbar (D-Colony) 709 to 579 in the county. Otto won 5,680 to 3,483 district wide,

Otto has been a teacher and principal in Kansas schools and a superintendent in Missouri schools. This will be his third term.

• District 10 state representative — John Coen (R-Baldwin City) defeated Tony Brown (D-Baldwin City) 2,029 to 1,194 in Franklin County; however, Brown won 5,414 to 5,022 districtwide, which includes northern Ottawa and northern Franklin County.

Brown has taught at Baker University for nearly 20 years. He has been serving on the Baldwin City Council the last four years.

• 59th District state representative — William Prescott (R-Osage City) defeated Jim Irey (D-Melvern) 944 to 823 in the county. Prescott won 4,100 to 3,491 districtwide, which covers western Franklin County.

Prescott is serving as an Osage County Commissioner. He is vice chairman of the board of the East Central Kansas Economic Opportunity Corp., Ottawa, and has been president of the Osage County Farm Bureau.

Kansas Senate

• 12th District state senator — Incumbent Pat Apple (R-Louisburg) defeated Andrew Rickel (D-Garnett) 7,239 to 3,282 in Franklin County. Apple won 17,612 to 7,596 districtwide, which covers Franklin County except for the southwestern portion.

Apple is an electrician and co-owner of Apple Electric Inc. He was elected as a Kansas senator in 2005.

• 15th District state senator — Incumbent Derek Schmidt (R-Independence) ran unopposed. He earned 460 votes in Franklin County. This will be Schmidt’s third term.
