County, state see records with votes

By JENALEA MYERS, Herald Staff Writer

Franklin Countians turned out to vote Tuesday in record numbers.

Unofficial results show 11,672 out of the registered 16,974 voters, or 68.76 percent, cast their ballots in the general election.

This year’s voter turnout is slightly more than the 62 percent, or a little more than 11,000 voters, who voted in the 2004 general election.

Of those who voted, 2,544 cast their ballots in advance while 9,128 voted on Election Day.

The Franklin County Commission is scheduled to canvass the election results at 8:30 a.m. Monday at the Franklin County Courthouse, 315 S. Main St. Results are not official until the canvass.

Kansans broke the record of the number of advance voters with more than 415,000 people casting their ballots before Tuesday.

Secretary of State Ron Thornburgh predicted Kansas would have a record turnout Tuesday, and it did; however, the actual number fell just short of his prediction.

Thornburgh said more than 1.3 million voters, or 78 percent, would go to the polls in Kansas, but results show more just than 1.2 million Kansans voted.

I Commend Those.... : Thursday, November 06, 2008 8:47 PM

I wish to commend the candidates who rose to the occasion and put their names out there (and on the ballot) this year. I am encouraged that there are still some good old fashioned folks around Franklin County that have an honest heart and want to give back to their county and fellow citizens. It's just too bad that not everyone could have a seat, I think Barnhart and Hirt would have been an added bonus to the County Commission, giving different views and opinions and opening up new horizons to the scene. Franklin County needs some eye opening experiences, and I am encouraged we will see that. The one last thing that would be great to see is less hash slinging on here and more upbeat positive feedback. If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all. There's an old saying "do unto others as you'd have done unto you" I know who a couple people are that are out there talking trash, and it really is pathetic. So now that it's all over, let's grow up and make Franklin County the best it can be!
