The Ottawa University women’s soccer team had to knock off some rust after a 10-day layoff.

The Lady Braves were afforded the break after winning the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season title.

Ottawa received a bye in the first round of the KCAC postseason tournament.

The Lady Braves returned to action Tuesday in the semifinals against Friends at Peoples Bank Field.

Ottawa seized control with two goals, a couple of minutes apart, late in the second half to post a 3-0 victory.

Ottawa (15-4) returns to the championship match 4 p.m. Saturday in Hillsboro against Kansas Wesleyan for the second straight season.

The Lady Coyotes defeated Ottawa in last year’s title match.

The winner will represent the KCAC in the NAIA National Tournament.

“The second half was much nicer,” Ottawa coach Craig Shaw said. “We were flat. Ten days was just forever. We did not play that great. We are so deep. We have so many players that can come off the bench.”

Ottawa jumped on top early as Whitney Bowen scored the first of her two goals at the eight-minute mark. Raechelle Sloan had the assist.

The score remained that way until there were nine minutes remaining in the match. Bowen took a 50-yard pass from Stephanie Segura to score.

A couple of minutes later, Ottawa capped off the scoring with Sheridan Horner’s goal off of Jo-anne Glynn’s cross.

Now, the attention turns to Kansas Wesleyan. Ottawa defeated the Lady Coyotes 3-0 earlier this season.

Shaw said Ottawa played nervous in last year’s final.

“We are a year older now,” he said. “This is finals time. It is huge.”
