Ottawa men edge Haskell for first victory

LAWRENCE — The Ottawa University men’s basketball team won its first game of the season Wednesday over Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence.

It was down to the wire as Ottawa won 64-63. The young Braves overcame a 36-33 halftime deficit. The Indians netted just 27 points in the second half.

Junior posts Chris Tate and Jake Carter combined for 30 points and 19 rebounds to pace the Braves.

Tate, a junior college transfer, had his best game in an Ottawa uniform with 18 points, 11 rebounds and two assists.

Carter finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and three assists. They were the only Braves in double figures.

The Braves had just enough offense with 11 players scoring. Ottawa shot 40 percent in the second half and overcame Haskell hitting eight treys.

Ottawa (1-3) plays 7 p.m. Saturday at home against Baker.
