CHMS wrestlers place in Iola

IOLA — The Central Heights Middle School wrestling team had 12 wrestlers place Tuesday at Iola.

The team was coached by Jeff Meyer and assisted by Randy Hinderliter.

“I continue to be amazed by the competiveness our team shows. They battle hard and show a ton of heart,” Meyer said.

Alex Shrimpton finished first. Taking second were Gavin Holler, J.R. Dunnivan, Kaleb Grimsley and Jacob Anderson. The third-placers were Wyatt Johnson, Blayne Roelker, Coby Robertson, Donovan Milliken, Cameron Finch, Chance Schooler and Eli Davis. Other team members were Tyler Hendron, Kyle Oshel, Cheyenne Asbury and Willie Malone.



OU men soccer fall in OT


SALINA — The Ottawa University men’s soccer team’s season came to an end Wednesday with a 2-1 overtime loss to Kansas Wesleyan in Salina.

After a scoreless first half, Kansas Wesleyan struck first at the 71-minute mark on a penalty kick by Arturo Guizar to take a 1-0 lead.

Ottawa tied the game seven minutes later when Zech King scored sending the game into overtime. Kansas Wesleyan scored eight minutes into the overtime period when Derek Dodrill’s pass found Nathan Taylor for the winning goal.

Ottawa finished 9-11.

OU baseball picked sixth in poll

The Ottawa University baseball team was selected sixth in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference by the coaches.

Ottawa had 17 points and was selected ahead of Bethany (15). Sterling is the favorite, garnering six of the seven first-place votes. University of Saint Mary was second and had the other first-place vote.



Kansas signs Phoenix star


LAWRENCE (AP) — No. 1 Kansas has signed Royce Woolridge, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard from Phoenix who averaged almost 29 points per game last year.

The Jayhawks announced the signing Wednesday.

Playing for Sunnyslope High School in Phoenix, Woolridge made 50 percent of his field goals and was 34 percent from behind the 3-point arc as a junior. He also averaged 2.5 assists and 2.1 steals last year.

Woolridge verbally committed to Kansas in 2008. He was ranked the No. 31 shooting guard by Rivals.com. and led his high school to a 24-5 record last year.



Chiefs place Goff on IR


KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have put guard Mike Goff on injured reserve Wednesday and signed linebacker Justin Rogers.

Goff made seven starts at right guard for the Chiefs (1-7), whose injury-plagued offensive line has been a problem.

Rogers appeared in 31 games the past two seasons with the Dallas Cowboys and made three tackles.

 He had 34 special teams tackles. Terms of Rogers’ signing were not released Wednesday.
