Residents from Franklin County might be staying a little closer to home this holiday season because of the recession.

Judith O’Hara, with the Hutchinson Chamber of Commerce, said there are a number of events throughout the next few months and the holiday season that would interest people from the Franklin County area.

“We have people from all over the world that come,” O’Hara said.

She urged those wanting to visit Hutchinson to look at the Web site, www.visithutch.com.

But Hutchinson  isn’t the only nearby attraction for those looking for places to visit on a tight budget.

Dodge City, Manhattan, Salina, Leavenworth, Topeka, Wichita, Kansas City and Lawrence are popular places for people — especially Kansans looking to stay close to home — to visit, according to the state’s travel and tourism division Web site, www.travelks.com.

But people also visit Ottawa.

Amber Wood, marketing director for the Franklin County Convention and Visitors Bureau, said people from neighboring counties have come to Ottawa for recreation.

“We’ve had people closer come,” Wood said.

She said people from neighboring counties like Johnson County have come to the city.

“I haven’t heard of anyone coming to stay,” she said. “But for fun, yes.”
