BALDWIN CITY — The Ottawa University women’s basketball team can’t find the range with its shooting so far in the 2009-2010 season.

The Lady Braves shot 27 percent Friday in a 77-48 loss to Benedictine in the Baker Classic in Baldwin City.

Ottawa scored just 54 points Tuesday in a loss to MidAmerica Nazarene.

“The disappointing thing was the four assists,” Ottawa coach Bruce Tate said. “We are not getting easy baskets. The ball is not going through the hole right now.

”Benedictine took us out of what we like to do. We were standing.”

Ottawa did get to the free-throw line in the second half, hitting 13 of 20 from the line, which was half of the 27 points.

“We got to the free-throw line in the second half,” Tate said. “We had to score with the clock stopped.”

The Lady Braves were down just 10-8 when Ottawa went into a drought. Benedictine scored nine straight points to open a 19-8 lead and led 33-21 at halftime.

“Our defense kept us in it in the first half,” Tate said. “We could not convert on forced turnovers.”

Ottawa did force 23 turnovers, but had 31.

Tate said Ottawa can’t let a team get a big lead with the Lady Braves attack struggling.

“We have to keep our heads up,” he said. “We have to find ways to give us opportunities to win. We have to keep playing hard.”

Emma Hartzler paced Ottawa with 15 points. Maggie Hasenkamp tossed in 10. Myah Sprew snared 12 rebounds.

Ottawa (1-4) plays 3 p.m. today against Baker.

Benedictine (77) — Flores 5, Zienkewicz 17, Huff 11, Reischl 6, Wolfe 5, Stratman 11, Anselmi 5, Garoutte 4, Thorne 3, Janecek 7, Stinson 2.

Ottawa (48) — Gibson 1, Stone 7, Hartzler 15, Mueller 8, Hasenkamp 10, Smith 3, Buckles 2, Sprew 2.
