Benefit planned to build new church

Homewood Christian Church was razed

By BRIAN WILLIAMS, Herald Staff Writer

Members of the Homewood Christian Church are proving that a church is more than a building.

But they’d like to have one all the same.

The church has been having its services in its Sunday school annex since the church was razed a couple of weeks ago because of a black mold problem. A chili and soup fundraiser to raise money to build a new church will be from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Williamsburg Community Building, 126 Williams St. Old Time Country will perform at the fundraiser, Don Higdon, an organizer and a member of the church board, said.

Higdon said he believes the lack of a foundation caused water to soak into the wood structure and years of this caused the mold.

“People were getting sick. The church was 140 years old and had no foundation,” he said.

“It’s something we all hated to see done but sometimes you have to bite the bullet,” he said about tearing down the church which was on Idaho Road just south of Old U.S. 50.

The congregation has had services in the Sunday school annex, which is about 15 years old and near the church site.

“Oh, it’s cozy,” Higdon said about the space constraints.

Plans are drawn up for a new church, although county permits have not been secured yet, he said.

A new church will be built where the old one stood and a handicapped accessible hallway will connect it to the Sunday school annex, Higdon said.
