Police foundation having fundraiser for DARE camp in December

By MEAGAN PATTON, Herald Connections Editor

The newly formed Ottawa Police Foundation will have its first fundraiser: “Breakfast with the Chief,” Dec. 3.

About 30 people have been invited to the fundraiser so far, Police Chief Dennis Butler said.

The primary goal is to raise money for the city’s 25th annual DARE camp.

DARE, which stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education, is a voluntary program for students in the fifth grade. If students complete the course, they have the option of going to DARE camp, a three-day, activity-filled camp that includes canoeing, archery, rock wall climbing and team building.

Last year, the department had 94 students attend the camp.

“Of course the message about ‘Don’t use drugs,’ is taught in DARE,” Butler said. “This is their reward for completing the program.”

Although the camp is the foundation’s signature goal, a cadet program and a new software system also are on the group’s wish list.

Butler said he’s unsure whether the fundraiser will be repeated next year.

“We’re just getting our legs under us and getting off the ground,” Butler said. “We’ve never done this before, so we’ll see how it goes and evaluate the success of this one.”

The foundation was created as a non-profit organization in May as a means to raise money for special police department projects that are outside the city budget, board chairwoman Janet Peters said.
