Judge tosses theft case against local pastor

By The Herald Staff

A local pastor accused of theft was acquitted this morning in a directed verdict from Judge Eric Godderz.

In the second day of a jury trial that was scheduled to last three days, Godderz ruled there was insufficient evidence to have the case of Robert Kenton Mathews, Ottawa, move forward to a decision by the 13 jury members.

Mathews, who was accused of stealing more than $6,000 in gold coins from an elderly parishioner, is the current pastor of Grace Community Fellowship and former pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church, both in Ottawa.

Following the decision, Mathews declined to comment.

For more on the Mathews trial, see The Herald’s Thursday edition.
