Ottawa men can't match Avila

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Unfortunately, the Ottawa University men’s basketball team is not ready to win a shootout contest.

That is what the game turned into in the second half for Ottawa and Avila University.

Both teams lit up the scoreboard, but the Braves could not keep pace and fell 80-66 to Avila Tuesday at Mabee Field House. Ottawa is now 20-14 all-time versus the Eagles.

Ottawa was down by six points at halftime, 33-27, after shooting just 31 percent.

In the second half, Avila went 18 of 26 from the field for 69 percent, while Ottawa was 16 of 27 for 57 percent.

Ottawa was led by freshman Corey Smith’s  career-high 17 points. Jake Carter came off of the bench to net 13 points.

Ottawa (1-6) plays 4 p.m. Saturday in Fulton, Mo., against William Woods University.
